August 2026 Newsletter
August at BASC
There is plenty happening at the Barre Area Senior Center this August! Along with our regular programs and activities, we are welcoming new leadership, looking for additional volunteers, and continuing to provide opportunities for older adults to stay active, connected, and involved.
Updated Hours for August
Our August hours are:
Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM–1:00 PM Friday: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
Some regularly scheduled programs may continue outside of these hours.
Board of Directors Update
Following the Annual Meeting on July 16, the Barre Area Senior Center is pleased to welcome its updated Board of Directors.
Ilene Elliott will serve as President, Jack Thompson as Vice President, Nancy Clermont as Treasurer, and Lynda Murphy as Secretary. Muriel Clark, Alaina Paquette, and Betty Tillotson will serve as Board Members.
We are grateful to everyone who has volunteered their time and leadership, and we thank Maureen “Moe” Desmarais and Jack Mitchell for their years of service to BASC.
Join the Finance Committee
BASC is seeking additional Finance Committee members. You do not need to be a financial professional—an interest in budgeting, planning, and strengthening the Center’s future is enough.
Contact the Center to learn more or sign up.
Meet Our New Director of Operations
Hello! My name is Ryan Barr, and I am excited to join the Barre Area Senior Center as the new Director of Operations.
In addition to my work at BASC, I serve as an Operations Supervisor at Gopher, a local nonprofit transportation organization that helps connect community members with the places and services they need.
I previously worked at the Waterbury Area Senior Center, where I saw firsthand how important senior centers are in creating connections, reducing isolation, and helping older adults remain active and involved in their communities.
Outside of work, I enjoy coaching high school football and spending time with my fiancée, Rae, and our golden retriever, Duncan.
I look forward to getting to know our members, volunteers, and community partners while helping support the Center’s daily operations and future growth.
Please stop by and introduce yourself—I am excited to be part of the BASC community!

Announcements & Community News
Weather Closure Policy
BASC will close when schools in the Barre Unified School District—Barre City, Barre Town, and Spaulding—close because of weather conditions.
BASC staff may also close the Center when weather or safety conditions require it.
We will post closure information on WCAX and Facebook. When in doubt, please call before coming in.
Volunteers Needed: Seniors in Motion
Our Seniors in Motion exercise class has been offered for years, and we are looking for new people to learn the program as substitute instructors and possible lead instructors in the future.
This is a great opportunity for current participants or anyone interested in helping older adults stay active.
Ask at the front desk for a Volunteer Interest Form or contact BASC to learn more.
Our Mission
The Barre Area Senior Center provides access to programs and resources that help older adults live independently and remain active.
Our purpose is to help people age 50 and older in our local communities age well by providing space and opportunities to expand social contact, obtain resources, learn new things, and enjoy a sense of belonging.
Support BASC
BASC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our programs depend on fundraising events, grants, sponsorships, town funding, and tax-deductible donations from our community.
Your support helps us continue offering programs, activities, resources, and opportunities for older adults throughout the greater Barre area.
To donate or learn more, call 802-479-9512 or visit barreseniors.org.
